Organisation profile:

The Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering (MTM) of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven) is one of the few European university departments fully dedicated to materials research and houses the two groups that will be involved in the project: 1) “The Composite materials group (CMG)” was started in 1982 by Prof Ignaas Verpoest. The emphasis is put on textile and nano- reinforced composites, on advanced processing methods for composites and on sandwich materials. 2) “The Materials performance and non-destructive evaluation group (NDT)” is coordinated by Prof. Dr. ir. Martine Wevers at MTM are focused on the long-term material behaviour. The corrosion behaviour of materials as well as the damage development during mechanical loading (e.g. static, fatigue, impact, etc.) is studied and the modelling of this behaviour is subject of the fundamental approach. To monitor the damage development processes a number of non-destructive and advanced monitoring techniques are used.

Role in the project:

The KU Leuven groups will lead WP3 and contribute to WP1, WP2, WP7, WP8, WP9 and WP10. The main task is to provide optimized computer models of composite structures and their functional behavior based on the information gained from the internal material characterization. The KU Leuven will also provide their knowhow on the production, processing and non-destructive testing of complex composite structures (WP6).
