WP3 is focusing on the evaluation and optimization of cutting-edge X-ray computed tomography techniques, such as multi-energy XCT, high-resolution micro XCT and phase contrast imaging, for imaging CFRP composite parts at the micro- and meso-scale and on optimized image processing for the material characterization of composite components concerning porosity, voids such as delaminations, inclusions, cracks, etc., and the geometry, orientation and shape of the inner structures. Dedicated image processing techniques will be developed for optimized visualization of the different flaws.
Its purpose is to provide reliable and ready-to-use raw images, which will be exploited for further data evaluation, image analysis and algorithm development (WP7). The data will serve as quantitative input for modeling of advanced composite structures (WP8) and will be used to evaluate production flaws.
The final goal is to reduce the design, production and rework costs due to an enhanced understanding of the real inner 3D structures using micro XCT.
