Airbus’s modern and comprehensive product line comprises highly successful families of aircraft ranging from 107 to 525 seats: the single-aisle A320 Family, the wide-body long-range A330 and the all-new next generation A350 XWB Family, and the ultra long-range, double-decker A380 Family. The company also continues to broaden its scope and product range by applying its expertise to the military market. It is as well extending its portfolio of freighter aircraft that will set new standards in the general and express freight market sectors.

Across all its fly-by-wire aircraft families Airbus’s unique approach ensures that aircraft share the highest possible degree of commonality in airframes, on-board systems, cockpits and handling characteristics, which reduces significantly operating costs for airlines. Dedicated to helping airlines enhance the profitability of their fleets, Airbus also delivers a wide range of customer services in all areas of support, tailored to the needs of individual operators all over the world.

The mission of the transnational department “Non Destructive Inspection and Mechanical Test” and mechanical testing is to provide technology readiness, availability, and application of state-of-the-art non-destructive inspection/non-destructive testing processes and mechanical tests. Nearly 60 engineers and scientists are working in the areas research, development, standardization and qualification of non-destructive testing methods. The department belongs to the domain “Materials and Processes”, which ensures good interaction and information exchange with colleagues from material departments.

Main contribution at the CORSAIR project:

Airbus will contribute to work packages 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8. The main topics of Airbus in QUICOM are definition, preparation and provision of samples with natural and artificial flaws, specification of requirements about flaw types and sizes to be detected, ultrasonic testing for comparison with Computed Tomography (CT) and elaboration of industrial concepts for inspection of large Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) components with mobile CT (in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute (FHG). Airbus has already some experience in the field of mobile CT, together with the Fraunhofer institute (FHG) and another partner.
